Mark and his dog

In a world of so many differences
is there a way that we can all see the same
looking at a mirror of our existence
in the face of another with a different name?
Are there really so many differences,
in what we see in so many images,
when equality is what we are sure to aim?

I have an ego which I call my dog
an incredibly furry young fellow
you wouldn’t see him in a London fog
although his fur goes from a blond to a yellow
he has my instinct, emotion and mind
and like a blind man’s dog is trained to find
our way though life, to those eternal meadows.

He is really quite obedient
but he has some unquieting habits
his instincts and emotions are prone to changes
like running after cats and rabbits
to keep him under control
I have to be always on patrol
to curb a temperament so avid

I cannot do without him
for then I would surely be lost
to train a creature like this
there is enormous effort and cost
but he is the one that notices change
this is his function and is not to blame
and differences he makes more often than oft.

He is the one who could harbor prejudice
the result of an untrained canine intellect
after all he only perceives differences
since this is what his senses insist to collect
the difference between what is light and dark
and sound between what is silence and a bark
tells us what must be avoided and what must be kept

Em um mundo de tantas diferenças
existe uma maneira de todos vermos o mesmo
olhando para um espelho da nossa existência
na cara de outro com um nome diferente?
Existem realmente tantas diferenças,
no que vemos em tantas imagens,
quando igualdade é o que temos que buscar?

Eu tenho um ego que chamo de cachorro
um sujeito incrivelmente peludo
você não o enxergaria num nevoeiro em Londres
embora seu pêlo fica entre loiro a amarelo
ele tem meu instinto, emoção e mente
e como o cachorro de um cego é treinado para encontrar
nosso caminho pela vida, para aqueles prados eternos.

Ele é realmente muito obediente
mas ele tem alguns hábitos inquietantes
seus instintos e emoções são propensas a mudanças
como correr atrás de gatos e coelhos
para mantê-lo sob controle
eu tenho que estar sempre de patrulha
para coibir um temperamento tão ávido

Eu não posso ficar sem ele
pois então eu certamente estaria perdido
treinar uma criatura como esta
há um enorme esforço e custo
mas é ele que percebe a mudança
esta é a sua função e não tem culpa
e diferenças que ele faz com mais frequência
do que frequente.

Ele é quem pode abrigar preconceitos
o resultado de um intelecto canino não treinado
afinal ele só percebe diferenças
já que é isso que seus sentidos insistem em coletar
a diferença entre o que é claro e escuro
e som entre o que é silêncio e um latido
nos diz o que deve ser evitado e o que deve ser mantido
